It is possible to apply for a co-supervised PhD between Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and the University of Pisa. The two Principal Investigators involved are Prof. Yiyu Cai (MYYCai@ntu.edu.sg) and Prof. Simone Genovesi (simone.genovesi@unipi.it). The program is mostly addressed to students with a laurea degree from University of Pisa in Engineering or Physics.
DEADLINE is FEB 28, 2026
The topic of the research is briefly described hereafter:
Robotics hands require accurate and reliable sensing systems to enable effective object recognition and precise tools manipulation.
State-of-the-art solutions must be pushed forward to cope with current limitations represented by poor sensing range, slow response time, low sensitivity, cumbersome implementation, rigid form factor, failures of vision-based systems in poorly illuminated or dusted environments. The candidate will address these challenges by developing novel solutions based on a synergic exploitation of distributed tactile sensors and wireless RF ones. Some of the addressed monitored parameters will include pressure, grasping orientation, guidance and object discrimination. The fabrication of the sensors will exploit different transducing materials and will rely on 2D and 3D printing processes with conductive inks. Through experimental characterization of the physical behaviour of the sensors will be carried out to provide the proper range of operativity. The large volume of data generated by the hand sensors will be then exploited to train and develop Artificial Intelligence algorithms to assess the reliability and sensitivity of the implemented enhanced systems.
