Abstract:
A prevailing, though unwritten, assumption in current information systems is that they must be powered by artificial intelligence. While artificial intelligence is often integral, in many cases, such reliance is unnecessary and potentially introduces avoidable costs. In this presentation, I highlight several information system implementations, some previously or currently deployed or licensed, across a diverse range of domains. These domains include historical document and artifact processing, preservation, and regeneration; searching for foreign or uncommon names; ailment triage; and medical information retrieval. A consistent theme throughout these efforts is their simple yet effective design, which delivers actionable performance without excessive complexity. This presentation is intended for a general audience.
